Col. John Layton – Marion County Sheriff

As an employee of the Marion County Sheriff's Department, the race for the next Sheriff is of great concern to me. Not only for the fact that my tax dollars pay their salary or that they're the face of one of the local law enforcement agencies that serve and protect the community that I live in, but for the fact that my vote counts towards who my next boss will be. Not many people can say they get to vote for who they want their boss to be, they're just stuck with whoever happens to get hired.

I have been honored to have worked for Sheriff Frank Anderson for nearly the last two years, and I only wish I could work for him longer. He has brought the Marion County Sheriff's Department to the forefront of the law enforcement community, and who who he has put in the front office have made the department a wonderful place to work.

I have been doing a lot of research behind each candidate because I want to make sure that the person who receives my vote, I feel is the most qualified person for the job. While Sgt. Mark Brown from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department is a very qualified candidate and has lead various divisions of IMPD, I am having a hard time believing that he can lead an entire law enforcement agency.

It appears that Col. John Layton will be getting my vote in the May primaries when he goes against Sgt. Mark Brown to see who will represent the Democratic party in the race for Marion County Sheriff. I have had the honor of meeting Col. Layton and have been treated with nothing but theĀ utmost respect from him. And I am nothing but a lowly civilian employee who works out at the garage. But to Col. Layton, I am a piece of the puzzle that helps the Marion County Sheriff's Department at full efficiency. My job may not be the most glamourous job on the department, but without my job the Deputies would not have cars to be able to go out and do their jobs. Talking with Col. Layton, he makes me feel that my job is one of the most important on the department.

Col. Layton has been with the department for 40 years. From starting out as a low man on the totum pole to being appointed the Chief Executive Officer by current Sheriff Frank Anderson, Col. Layton has always enjoyed serving the people of Marion County. Not many people will spend 40 years at a job and want to be elected to continue their job for another four to eight years.

For those of you who read this and live in the Marion County, Indiana area, I encourage you to read up on each candidate and vote for who you think will do the best job as Marion County Sheriff. Myself, John Layton will receive my vote.
